BSH at IFA 2024: Seamless connectivity and AI integration

The future home and connectivity will be in the spotlight on the Bosch and Siemens stands at IFA this year

IFA International spoke with BSH Hausgeräte’s Managing Director Home Connect, Stefanie Lipps, about the advantages of BSH’s integrated connectivity and how visitors to IFA will be able to experience this at the show.

Shaping the future home is a big focus for BSH and its two main brands, Bosch and Siemens. Can you tell us about why this is so important?
For us, it’s really important that our appliances seamlessly integrate into the smart lives of our consumers. Whether they want to use our app or their own energy management system or other future use cases, they should be able to do so at any time.
We see a lot of potential in energy management use cases. In Germany, energy suppliers must offer dynamic energy tariffs, which means that energy is more affordable when it is in abundance. This is due to renewables, which provide periodic energy, often roughly between 2 and 5 p.m. At this time, people often don’t use a lot of energy, they use it in the mornings and the evenings to cook etc., but this is when it is cheapest to charge your car or run your dishwasher. This represents a large potential for our consumers, and in two to four years it will be commonplace that when you turn on an appliance, it will automatically choose this time frame to help save energy.

On a second level, this is an opportunity for us to bond with our consumers by offering a more personalised experience. We can know exactly what appliance a consumer has at home, if he or she has registered it and paired it. In the case of a problem, we know exactly what’s wrong and can read the precise error codes. We can predict which spare parts are needed to repair it, and then we can do so, or provide self-help in a new innovative and convenient way through the Home Connect app and customer service.

How are you bringing this experience to IFA this year?
We will have a 6,000-square metre space where we display our brands Bosch and Siemens. Bosch is focusing on living at home, and Siemens is focusing on the Intelligent kitchen. We will provide entertaining shows explaining the advantages of our products and their features.

Shaping the future home

BSH has many renowned brands in its portfolio including Bosch, Siemens, Gaggenau and Neff as well as local brands Constructa, Thermador, Balay, Coldex, PITSOS, PROFiLO, and Junker. Some of these brands have long histories, with historical milestones including Siemens’ first vacuum cleaner launched in 1906 weighing 150 kg and Bosch’s iconic first electric fridge launched in 1933. The latter had a capacity of 60 litres and a distinct round shape, and visitors to the IFA 100 Years Exhibition can see it along with a selection of other historic products.

While BSH has a strong past, the company is looking firmly to the future. Connected devices are very much the name of the game, providing consumers not only with ease of use (e.g. suggested recipes based on lifestyle, AI-detection washing cycles based on how dirty items are etc.) but also optimised energy use and bespoke assistance allowing them to repair basic problems themselves. At this year’s IFA Kick-Off in July, Managing Director Home Connect, Stefanie Lipps, highlighted the importance of the Matter open standard for home appliances which allows users to connect appliances from different manufacturers. All Bosch Smart Home products are matter-enabled, which means consumers can use the Bosch app or another app/device of their choice. Visitors to IFA this year can experience the innovations of Bosch and Siemens and get a taste of the home of the future, which is just around the corner.
