IFA kicks off with a message of transformation and technological innovation at the heart of Berlin.
The IFA 2024 opening gala took place on 5 September, bringing together prominent figures such as Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Berlin Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, Berlin State Senator for Economy, Energy and Enterprise Franziska Giffey, and key leaders from the tech industry. Leif Lindner, CEO of IFA Management, highlighted the historical significance of the event: “IFA has been writing history for 100 years.” He emphasised that IFA’s evolution is not only about design, but also about content, featuring a rich conference programme and a focus on inspiring enthusiasm for technology among young people.
Dr Sara Warneke, Managing Director of gfu Consumer & Home Electronics GmbH, quoted Einstein, reminding the audience that “it’s technicians who make true democracy possible,” while also cautioning about past abuses of technology. Kai Wegner celebrated the strong connection between Berlin and IFA, stating, “Berlin is a metropolis that stands for technology and innovation. Both IFA and the city constantly reinvent themselves, while remaining true to their roots.” He also noted IFA’s significant contribution to making Berlin a hub for tech startups and innovation.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the importance of staying at the forefront of technology, particularly in artificial intelligence, and emphasised IFA’s role in strengthening Germany’s technological independence. He remarked, “Trade shows like IFA are essential in creating a positive atmosphere that fosters confidence and economic growth.”
In addition to his address at the gala, Chancellor Scholz also participated in the opening tour of the IFA exhibition on Friday, 6 September. His visit further underscored the government’s commitment to supporting technological innovation and industry development, with a particular focus on AI and Germany’s role in global supply chains.
