IFA Berlin welcomed a special guest last week, Minister Wu Cheng-wen of Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC).
Taiwan, already a dominant player in the production of semiconductors, is now setting its sights on becoming an “AI Island”. This was the message that Minister Wu Cheng-wen delivered in person this past Thursday is a press conference held just at IFA Berlin.
“We believe that our participation can help make this event successful”, he said of the 2024 edition of the world renowned trade show. “If we want to make AI for all, we need to bring the entire world together, because AI will help the entire world.”
This year marks IFA’s 100th anniversary and it’s also the first time that Taiwan has sent an official delegation to the event. This comes a year after Germany and Taiwan signed a Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement. It is the island’s first such agreement with a European nation.
Wu Cheng-wen dedicated special attention in his address to the importance of start-ups. In their early stages, the Minister explained, new tech companies face enormous hurdles. “They must first get through the valley of death,” he said.
The NSTC is committed to giving young talent the support it needs to survive and grow, Wu Cheng-wen insisted. To that end, Taiwan is collaborating with Germany’s IFA on a start-up competition. The theme of the event is “Unveiling the Mysteries of AI,” and the goal is to encourage ideas that could improve Taiwan’s sizeable supply chain.
“Our proposal for IFA is that we can be your partner”, the Minister said. “We would like to offer our strength in semiconductor production, but we would also like to learn from you so we can work together.”
