Siemens unveils AI-enhanced appliances at IFA 2024 for a smarter, greener way to do chores
The world renowned home appliances company is back at IFA Berlin with a host of smart new products, including a washer and dryer that can “talk” to each other
Siemens Home Appliances, part of the BSH Hausgeräte GmbH Group, is a leading brand in the field of kitchen AI, as evidenced by its latest line of smart and stylish products.
It has been 95 years since Siemens Home Appliances introduced the first electric kitchen according to the brand, known as the “Reform Kitchen”, and just as it was then, the company remains committed to making life easier for its customers.
The introduction of electricity revolutionised how people went about their housework, and now, all these years later, Siemens feels that the home appliances sector is at a similar turning point, driven this time by intelligent technologies and AI.
By integrating these technologies into home appliances, Siemens is making household chores easier still, with smart ovens, for example, that are equipped with dish recognition to ensure optimal temperature and cooking time. Its AI-enhanced products also allow for improved energy efficiency, helping customers contribute to climate and environmental protection.
Among the various new products that Siemens is presenting at IFA this year, three, in particular, stand out: the iQ500 inductionAir Plus hob and the new iQ500 washer and dryer.
Hard as diamonds
The new iQ500 inductionAir Plus hob is a step forward for Siemens in terms of both design and functionality. For starters, it features a CERAN surface with a patented, scratch-resistant coating called diamondProtect.
Designed to resist the typical wear and tear of high heat, abrasive sponges or salt at the bottom of the pan, the new coating keeps the hob looking sharp and shiny for longer, and for users this means more peace of mind as they won’t have to take as much care when handling pots and pans or cleaning the surface of the hob.
Speaking of worry-free, the iQ500 inductionAir Plus hob also comes equipped with what the company calls fryingSensor Pro, allowing users to select not just a power level, but a temperature level that the appliance automatically monitors — and maintains — in the way cruise control keeps a car moving at a consistent speed.
If users are unsure which of the hop’s 11 temperature settings (between 70 °C and 220 °C) to choose, Siemen’s Home Connect app is there with advice, be it for how to make the perfect omelette or how to reduce sauces. The app even has a repertoire of recipes to suggest.
Ergonomic and eco-friendly
Siemens is breaking new ground as well when it comes to laundry, with its iQ500 washing machine and dryer, which boast a design upgrade geared towards making the appliances especially easy (and comfortable) to use.
They feature slightly slanted panels with generously sized, intuitive displays that are easy to read. Blue light markings indicate the selected settings clearly, making it easier for users to operate the broad array of programmes and options.
In addition, the washer and dryer can “talk” to each other as the two appliances share sensor data directly via Wi-Fi. As a result, the dryer — even before it is loaded up — knows how much laundry it will be receiving and which spin cycle was used. This allows it to suggest an optimal drying program, and saves users the hassle of having to check on the progress of their clothes. The new technology helps protect the textiles as well.
Another tech addition is what Siemens calls the smartFinish program, designed specifically to address the problem of creased or wrinkled garments. The smartFinish option freshens up clothes in just 20 minutes using steam, and reduces creases by up to 50%, the company explains, making ironing virtually unnecessary.
Siemens is committed to energy efficiency, and the new washer and dryer appliances don’t disappoint in that regard either. The iQ500 dryer has an A+++ rating. The iQ500 washing machine undercuts the limit value of the best energy efficiency class A by 20%. And with the Home Connect app, users can even reduce the mechanical action of the washer to reduce the release of microplastics from the fabric by up to 30%.
