Milestones from a rich 100-year legacy

This year, the leading trade show for the international consumer electronics and home appliance industry is celebrating its centennial. It’s an opportunity to reflect back on some of the key moments in IFA’s 100-year history as we also look forward to an extraordinary anniversary year at IFA Berlin 2024 with an inspiring programme, exciting product launches and informative events.

1924: The first IFA was held at the in Messedamm in Berlin Westend on 4 December, 1924 and dubbed the “Great German Radio Exhibition” (Große Deutsche Funkausstellung). The show’s beginnings were marked by detector devices and tube radio receivers, followed by superhet receivers, gramophones, the first sound recording processes and live broadcasts from the exhibition grounds, as well as the first European car radio.

1926: The famous Funkturm broadcasting tower, on which work began in 1924, was inaugurated on 3 September, 1926.

1928: The first television sets were presented at the trade show and one of the first television shows ever was broadcast live during the event.

1930: The world-renowned physicist Albert Einstein gave the opening speech at the seventh edition of the show.
