Home entertainment trends: How viewing habits are changing
Visitors walking the halls of IFA this year will have noticed the range of choice and innovations in the home entertainment sector. In today’s fast-paced digital world, the way we consume entertainment is rapidly evolving. Gone are the days when the television was the sole medium for watching movies and TV shows. Now, consumers are increasingly turning to smartphones, tablets, and laptops to stream their favourite content. This shift in viewing behaviour is reshaping the entertainment landscape.
In 2023, a staggering 74% of consumers globally streamed movies or TV content on a laptop, desktop PC, or smartphone. This marks a significant increase from 2020, with a 5 point rise for smartphones and an 8 point rise for laptops and desktop PCs. Despite this trend, televisions still hold a special place in our hearts, offering a premium experience with large screens and superior audio quality.
Interestingly, the share of screens smaller than 55 inches is decreasing, while larger screens, especially those 70 inches and above, are gaining popularity. Revenue data from the first half of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, shows a 14% increase in revenue for TVs 70 inches and larger, while revenues for TVs smaller than 55 inches dropped by 9%.
